The following is a reprint from my personal Blog.
Episode 2 of season 3 is up, be sure to give it a watch. I have watched it twice already and while I find it as brilliant and amusing as Day's other episodes; I am noticing some very dark undertones this season. The back drop for the first two episodes is a Gamestop Parking lot, (which oddly is at the Mall in Fountain Vally where I use to skateboard as a kid.) I don't know who did the camera work but it gave these shots a very surreal look just by the camera angles that were used, and that is no mean feat in Happy slappy southern California. The last time I saw this pulled off successfully was the final building top fight scene in the original Matrix movie.
There is a lot going on these first couple of episodes, and while all of it is laugh out loud funny, it also takes some disturbing shots at the Stereotypical MMo player, and the desensitized culture of Sou Cal. Day unapologeticly voices her concerns about said culture while at the same time outs herself as being a large part of it for right or wrong.
There clearly are no heroes so far this season. Clara is the Poster child for self absorbed unfit parent, Bladezz has gone from a likable smart ass, to a brooding Jaded smart ass, Zaboo has thrown away all his principals over STHG, Tink is on some Hamlet-esque scorched earth revenge trip, Vork has fell apart like a soggy taco, and Codex is an unwilling witness to it all....any moment I expect her to blurt out: "What in the hell am I doing in this life with these people?!"
It is going to be interesting to see how it all plays out, I have to take my hat off to Felicia Day, she is certainly taking chances this season; one misstep and she is going to come off as preachy, or worse enter the Jerry Sienfeild genre of dark comedy which barely works for him and definitely won't work for anyone else; but for all of these twist The Guild is still the most interesting thing to watch on or off the web these days, and I can't wait for Episode 3.
