Watch The Guild

As a Scotsman myself, I feel the need to set the record straight on many of the disparaging comments made about the males of my nation on Felicia's blog.

I am not deluded and realise that many of my kin can be both vulgar and stupid. And I would not presume to suggest that they are greatly dissimilar from any other male on the planet. However, what I can talk about is myself and the people I know personally here in the small country of Scotland.

To begin with, the kilt is an extremely warm and comfortable garment and can be worn without issue in most weathers except extreme heat. However, in Scotland, this is rarely an issue. The sky is grey with clouds almost all the time. Our national flag symbolizes one of the few moments when blue sky was seen. However, even though the kilt was designed to accommodate the weather in times gone by, it is now relegated to special occasions. I wore one myself last weekend at a wedding, for example, as did many others. Outside of such events, it is fairly rare to see a Scottish man wearing his kilt.

The second issue I feel I must address is the description of the Highlander as an essentially feral man who can do little but build muscles and procreate. If one actually looked at the amount we have sex in Scotland, it is about the same as in America. Needless to say, we are not all 'getting some' all the time. But I dare say, if we did, we would be so thrilled that a woman had actually allowed us to share bodily contact that we would be extremely considerate lovers in hope that she might let us do it again.

But, at the end of the day, we are essentially an artistically and academically driven people. We take pride in the inventions we have given the world and the various Scottish people who have made their mark. We also have a free education system that takes us right through to the end of University should we prove to have the talent. For example, I am currently being paid by the government to continue my studies to PhD level and have never had to pay a thing for my education. This is perhaps more impressive when you see that many of our Universities are in the top 200 in the world.

I hope people don't mind my little comment here. I take no offence at the post (in fact I was delighted by the humorous look at the Scots) and welcome anything that draws attention to my little country. But I thank you for reading my comment as well in the hope that it gives another point of view.

Heh. If the world judged the USA by its media, they'd think we're all rich, scandalous, hateful, stupid, obsessive gluttons. :)

Wait. The world does just that. :(

You guys are not alone. (Still, I want to go live in Scotland just from what I know from my parents who worked there for a while.)
Yeah, I think most countries somewhat unfairly hate America at the moment. It seems to have become the world's scapegoat. Still, electing Obama has been great for restoring the international good feelings towards the USA.

Scotland is a nice place, to be sure. Very pretty and people are generally quite friendly. But I'd definitely visit first before deciding to live here. The weather proves too depressing for a lot of people. You can literally go months without actually seeing the sun. My office here has special light bulbs that project UV light so that we don't get Seasonal Affective Disorder.
Scotland's terrible. I hate it here. Just feels so... mediocre.
I'm not worried. We have long bouts of overcast, and my working conditions keep me away from the sun most of the time when it's out.

My folks loved it there. They wanted to stay longer, but the next job was in London. (They loved it there, too. The only place they've disliked was Nigeria out of all the places they've lived. They even liked Saudi Arabia for the 7 years they were there.)
Well, I'm really chuffed that they liked it so much :)
Your link of Scotish inventions leaves off the fax machine!!! What the heck!

Granted its not the fax that we use today but the logic and idea came from the scots, and you forgot the Celtic FC from Glasgow!!!

I will say I lived with a guy from Glasgow and his libido worked on over drive and his accent paid him a lot of favors
I must say that I didn't know about the Facsimile Machine being a Scottish invention. It's nice to think we've done so much for the world that we're losing track :)

I would suggest that Celtic Football Club is probably more of an Irish invention that just happens to exist in Glasgow. I'm not a football supporter myself, but out of interest to those reading who don't know, Rangers is another football club in Glasgow and is significantly bigger.

If I were to be a little mean, I'd suggest that some of the supporters of both clubs are probably the closest types of Scots to the ones Felicia's books were describing ;)
HEY NOW!!!

Gers fans maybe they are pretty much thugs! But I am a Celtic Supporter myself and I am a pure gentleman full of class. :)
Class. He's full of it.

(I couldn't help myself. I blame Looney Tunes.)
lol, just kidding Joe.
haha I know

But when you do get those lads together trouble is brewin. The Old Firm is one ugly event. Not as bad as Boca Jrs vs River Plate, but thats a Class War.

You Scots have provided the world with a lot of greatness. I am living proof, my Grandparents are Scots left when they young and freshly married.
As someone of Scottish decent myself, I'm gonna chime in briefly. American Romance Novels are typically trash that women read because they feel neglected and unromanced or appreciated or satisfied and Scottish Men are just plain Sexy so it's no wonder they've become the subject of an entire sub-genre of Romantic fiction. The Scots are intelligent, talented, romantic and fiercely loyal. What's not to love?

I will say that Outlander is not your typical romance. I hate romance novels and refuse to read them but was given Outlander by a friend who knew my family history and my love of Science Fiction and Fantasy. Outlander is a time travel story of a World War I era woman thrown back to the Jacobite uprising. The history is researched and gives a very good account not only of the way people lived during a 30 year period in the last 1700s but also a bit of insight into the events, the wars and politics of the time. I thought it was wonderful because it explored the Jacobite struggle and subsequent transporting of loyal families as endentured servants to the Americas by the new English monarchy. (My own family were Jacobites who were transported)

So, anyway, Scots are smart and sexy. The trashy books don't even begin to do them justice. :)
